Description
This is an excellent example of 1970s Cartier work—sculptural, graphic, and rather surprising! The necklace is made of sterling silver with yellow gold inlay and consists of a series of overlapping ribbons, with narrow strips of gold wrapping through the silver like fabric. The coordinating earrings follow the same architectural design, which is why we found the whole set so special!
During the 1970s, Cartier explored combining sterling silver with gold, especially in bold, modernist designs meant for everyday wear instead of just formal occasions.
What I especially love is the contrast between the solid silver structure, the gold accents, and the angular folds that yet look like soft ribbon. That’s very much the style of Cartier, though not the kind everyone else has.
A note on the history: Cartier’s silver and gold jewelry from this time has become well known for showing a different side of the brand. These pieces are less formal than Cartier’s diamond jewelry but are equally design-focused. The bold size and mix of metals are typical of jewelry made from the late 1960s through the 1970s.
