Ring jackets came of age in the bold 1970s and 80s, made to frame an engagement ring and give a modest solitaire some serious drama. Their roots go back further, though: Victorian and Edwardian women wore guard rings to protect soft gems, and mid-century brides added diamond bands as anniversary upgrades.
