Description
A touch of Tiffany, a touch of Studio 54, and all Donald Claflin (IYKYK).
These chunky X earrings date to about 1976-77, the grand finale of Claflin’s run at Tiffany, and they’ve got all the seventies attitude you’d hope for. Big, bold and all-in on the gold. On the ear they manage to look totally polished and just a little bit rebellious.
A quick bit of backstory for the collectors: Claflin studied at Parsons, did stints at David Webb and Van Cleef & Arpels, and landed at Tiffany in 1965, where Walter Hoving championed his work. He’s best known for his whimsical dragons, critters and fruit, but he loved a strong sculptural shape just as much, and these are proof. He left Tiffany in 1977, and pieces from his era have become real collector favorites.
